Annual General Meeting
The main meeting at the Community Centre on 21st September will be the AGM. This year there will be no speaker to allow emphasis to be given to the activities of the Interest Groups. All group leaders are invited to present their skills and achievements and to take names of U3A members who might wish to join a particular group. If the group is already full then to pass on the names to the Group Co-ordinator (Ken Osborne) so that a new group might be formed. Any Group Leader requiring a table or display board is requested to advise Ken prior to the meeting. The Community Centre will be open from 12.00 noon to allow time to set up the displays prior the AGM starting at 2.00 pm.
Paul ChapmanChanging Years project meeting
This September sees the launch of Hayling Islands U3A new project , 'The Changing Years'.
This is a sequel to the very successful work which members carried out recording the 'Life and Times on Hayling Island 1914-1919' which culminated in the publication of a book of the same title, and an exhibition at the Royal British Legion. The new project will cover the years 1919-1946. The years which saw great changes in the lives of folk living and working on the Island. The years of hardship following the first world war; the beginnings of Hayling becoming a holiday destination because of the attraction of the fine sandy beach and the introduction of a weeks paid holiday; the development of seaside bungalows; then the dreams of so many were dashed with the outbreak of the second world war. Many Hayling men and woman answered the call to fight and die for their Country.
In undertaking this project we seek the help of descendants of Hayling families who lived and worked on the Island during those years, so we can recall their stories and experiences. We are eager to talk with family members who lost loved ones during the conflict as we wish to recall their memories as accurately as possible so that their sacrifice is recalled for future generation in the new publication. This project will involve many other organisations on Hayling who have offered support and information; The schools, the churches the British legion and Hayling Lions Club , the RNLI, and HISC. We plan to hold an exhibition in 2019 to illustrate these 'Changing Years'.
We plan to hold a number of open meetings to which residents are warmly invited to come along and tell of their families history, the first will be held at the Royal British Legion at 2pm next Friday, September 22nd.
If any member belongs to the web-site 'Find my Past' and is able to print off a copy of the '1939 register' for Hayling Island, this would be extremely useful in our research. It would give us the population on Hayling at that time and also the names of persons who were away from home in the forces or merchant Navy.
