A close up look at the incredible honeybee

At next Thursday's monthly meeting, David Nield presents an in-depth look at:

  • the honeybee;
  • what goes on inside the hive;
  • pollen and its uniqueness; and
  • problems our bees face and will hopefully overcome.

Wrong details in the Hayling Islander

Unfortunately this month's Hayling Islander shows an incorrect date and subject for this Thursday's monthly meeting. If you know someone who might be relying on our listing in the Islander, please let them know.

Group leader's meeting

A reminder that group leaders are invited to a meeting at 2.30 in the Royal British Legion next Tuesday, 15th May.

Changing years project update

Mike Burnham writes:

Hayling U3A, Hayling Lions Club, Hayling Royal British Legion and Hayling Community Centre are working together to collect the names of all local residents who lost their lives in WW2 through enemy action. It is proposed that a memorial plaque will be placed in the Community Centre in the autumn of 2019 remembering their names.

It is important for future generations that we do not forget the trauma that War had on the civilian population. Hayling’s darkest hours were in April 1941.

In order not to omit any names from the plaque we are publishing the names which research by the U3A have so far discovered:

  • Joan Boothby
  • Maud Boothby
  • Betty Boothby
  • Bertram Brown
  • James Brown
  • L.G. Edwards/Edmonds
  • Archibald Jones
  • Lilian Jones
  • Mary Jones
  • Robert Paye
  • Dorothy Middleton
  • Catherine McCologin
  • Thomas Lennox
  • Helen McGarth
  • Mary Spencer
  • Maud Spencer
  • Jeffery Steeples/Sparks
  • Mary Tizard
  • Ronald Walker

If you are a relative or have knowledge of any of the above names, please get in touch via changingyears@haylingu3a.org. We are very keen that no person should be omitted.

Please pass the list and contact details on to anyone you know that might be able to help. Alternatively we have arranged a series of coffee mornings where people with information to contribute can meet with members of the project team. The final two dates are: 16th May and 19th June; click either date for more details.

Longleat visit

The visit is getting booked up. If you'd like to go please make your booking online (booking details at the foot of the page) or at next Thursday's monthly meeting. Click here for more information.

We send this email on the week-end before each monthly meeting. If you have something you'd like to include please let me know.
