Membership fees due
The joining or re-joining fee is £15 for full members and £10 for associate members, with a sliding scale across the year.
To date there are approximately 90 people who have not so far renewed their membership. If these members have not renewed by the end of June, they will be lapsed and will therefore not be eligible to participate in any group or u3a activities. Once lapsed, these people would have to pay the re-joining fee (as above).
Group Leaders: please ensure that all your group members have paid their subscriptions - if you log in to the site, the member list shown by your group page(s) will identify any with overdue subscriptions.
If you know of anyone who has not renewed their membership reasons beyond their control, please tell us and we will see how we can help.
Ways to renew:
- Click here to see instructions for paying subscriptions. Please note that you are now able to pay online by card as well as bank transfer. Membership cards are emailed either the same day or very soon after.
- By cheque (payable to Hayling Island u3a) or cash to the membership secretary at:
Membership Secretary
c/o 18 St Marys Road
Hayling Island
PO11 9BY
Please make clear who the renewal is for. - At a monthly meeting by card, Google/Apple pay, cash or cheque.
June monthly meeting
Thursday 16th June at 2pm. The talk this coming month will be ‘Passports, Assassins, Traitors and Spies’ by Martin Lloyd.
Martin presents a dramatic account of how a group of assassins brought about change in the passport regulations; how the unmasking of a spy caused a modification in passport design; and how for one man the passport itself turned into a killer.
Martin worked for the Immigration Service for 24 years. He now writes books, and appears on television and radio.
Donkey derby
We are manning a stall at the Hayling Lions Donkey Derby on the Saturday 4th June 1pm-5pm. If you are willing to help with the stand during this time we would be very grateful. Just an hour or two during the day would be a great help. We are hoping to have some limited try-out activities on the stand including scrabble, card making and poetry writing.
Please contact me if you are able to help..
2nd June fun day and proms in the park
The Hayling Community Centre is organising a very large event on the afternoon and evening of the 2nd June. It is looking for people to help with the marshalling of the event throughout the day, even if it's just for an hour. The Hayling Community Centre is an important resource for the Island and we need to support it when and where we can.
Please contact me if you can help.
22nd June visit to Beaulieu and Buckler's Hard
An exceptional, subsidised price of £25 gives you a trip to the Beaulieu Motor Museum and, after lunch, historic Buckler's Hard where you can pay an extra £6.50 on the day to take a river cruise. You can book online and find out more here, or at next month's meeting.
Pickleball
Some of you may have seen the article in Third Age Matters about Pickleball. A mixture of tennis, badminton and table tennis, pickleball is played with a lightweight ball and square solid paddles or bats. The sport is not too energetic and ideal for those of us who are unable to move around as fast as we did. We are looking at setting up a Pickleball group, playing at the Hayling Community Centre. If you are interested in joining or finding out more, please contact me.
Doorstep, telephone and email scams
Hampshire County Council have sent out warnings to local organisations regarding the increase in doorstep fraud and scams. Please be aware of cold calling, be it via the doorstep, telephone or email. Always put the chain on the door before opening it to a stranger and never disclose bank or personal details to unknown callers.
Taster sessions for lawn bowls
Hayling Island Bowls Club is holding free taster sessions over the weekend of 27-29th May:
- 27th May, 2pm to 5pm
- 28th May 10am to 2pm
- 29th May 10am to 2pm.
Once you have trialled the activity you may wish to join our Lawn Bowls group that meets on a Thursday morning.
Car sharing scheme
Due to the restrictions in car parking at the Hayling Community Centre, we are encouraged to car share wherever possible. Parking can be very difficult for attendees at our monthly meeting.
In addition, we have members who would like to attend our monthly meetings but do not drive and find the use of public transport difficult.
It has been suggested that we investigate setting up a car share scheme, but we need to understand how many would be interested in participating in such a scheme either as a car driver or someone needing transport.
Please let me know if this scheme interests you either as a lift giver or lift requirer.
