Giles Moore's clothes: the clothing of a Sussex rector 1656 - 1679
At next Thursday's monthly meeting, Dr Danae Tankard of Chichester University will use the household account book of Giles Moore, rector of Horsted Keynes in Sussex, which provides an insight into the supply and acquisition of textiles and clothing, as well as choices of a well-to-do country parson; his attitudes to shopping and clothing through his selection of shops, trade and craftsmen; and his concerns about excessive prices, and his accessory choices. Hand bells group
Derek Dunn writes:
The U3A handbell team, Bell Canto when we play at concerts, has been running for nearly 12 years. During that time it has recorded two CDs, performed 3 radio programmes, joined the Solent Fellowship Band in five major concerts, played regularly at The URC church for the Lions Annual late night shopping event in Mengham, and played in more than a few churches and care homes.
And as well as enjoying some good music the group has melded together as great friends very welcoming to new members.
Sadly time has caught up on us and two of our much loved older members can no longer play, and a third has left the area in order to care for an elderly relative.
And so for the first time for a very long time we have several vacancies. If you can read music it helps, but as long as you are willing to learn to read the bell music, in no way complicated as there is but one line to read, you will be able to take a full part in the team very quickly.
We meet every other Friday morning from 10 till noon. And the mid-session flap-jacks are regarded the best in the country!

Years of change project

The project is coming along well and we have some very interesting information about Hayling Island between 1919 and 1946. We feel that the publication to be launched in November should be an interesting and informative book about the development of our Island during those years.
We are still seeking your help in offering items of interest for display in the exhibition which will run from the 2nd November to the 18th November at the Royal British Legion Club.
We are appealing for one or two members to offer to manage the rotor of Stewards we shall require during the opening hours of the Exhibition. If you could undertake this job please let me know.
We shall be seeking volunteers who are willing to act as stewards for two/three hours on duty. This is not an onerous task, mainly sitting at a table keeping an eye on things and selling the new publication. You will have the opportunity of meeting many interesting people. Rota sheets will be made available from our September meeting.
I am sure many of you know that the Hayling Islander is closing from this July, so one of our methods of making the residents of Hayling aware of the Exhibition is being cut off, so we are more dependent upon U3A members to tell friends and neighbours about this U3A project.
The programme of events for your diaries is as follows...
Official Launch of the book November 2nd at 11am, followed by the opening of the Exhibition at The British Legion.
November 7th ceremony and unveiling of a plaque and laying of poppies in remembrance of the fallen at St. Mary’s Church.
November 13th unveiling of civilian plaque at The Community Centre.

Potential mindfulness and meditation group
We are exploring the possibility of a new mindfulness and meditation group. The U3A committee is wary of straying into the area of therapy, but positive about the idea of the group, which will obviously need to address concerns around discussing personal, sensitive issues.

We've had a request for volunteers to help 'See Around Britain' build a new web site. It's unclear how worthwhile that will be as the site is pretty empty right now - at least in our area. Anyhow, click here learn more.
