Card making & paper craft report

Each card making group meets monthly and makes a card. Throughout the months January to August we make a card that can be adapted for Birthday, Thank You, Happy Anniversary etc, but from September to December we concentrate on making 4 different Christmas cards. (Again, we make one each month) The photo shows the cards that the groups will make this year, all quite different from each other but there are lots of different card making techniques to master. Alongside making the card we have lots of giggles as well as having refreshments.

If this is something you think you might like to try, I do have some spaces. Tuesday group 3 has 2 spaces, Tuesday group 4 has one space and Tuesday group 5 has two spaces.

All materials are provided and the cost is £2.50 per session

Group report

We are all hopeful that by the time you are reading this newsletter that we will be experiencing some form of social interaction but at the time of writing we are still in lock down.

Knowing that we would be unable to meet I have been preparing card kits for the groups to complete at home, This January was slightly different in that I set everyone a competition to produce a 2021 calendar. I provided a few basics and the criteria was to use the piece of white card and the calendar provided, the rest was up to each person's imagination, and entries had to be returned by the end of January.

You can see from the photograph how wide and varied the entries were and choosing a winner was very difficult.

The first prize was won by Ann Dodson and runner up was Eva Jessett. Everyone received a small gift for entering as you can never have too much stash for making cards!

Group report

As a group we managed to meet in March prior to lockdown little knowing that the next few months were going to be so restrictive. When I realised that we wouldn't be meeting for a while I set about designing cards that could be completed at home putting together card kits which I delivered out to everyone.

This was lovely because it did mean that I could catch up with some of the group as they received their kits from me on their doorstep. In August when it appeared that although Covid hadn't gone away but that it seemed to be under control I invited the groups (I run 3 groups with a maximum of 6 people to a group) an opportunity of meeting up to make a card together. I purchased face shields, disinfectant wipes and hand gels and designed cards that required little sharing of equipment.

Some decided that they would like to do this and others felt it was too soon for them to socialise. We met in August. In fact each group was small so I could easily offer working space which adhered to the guidelines, the chatter and banter that went on over these 3 small sessions was lovely, many of the group live alone and really enjoyed the social interaction.

I offered the same in September when we started our Christmas cards. I have designed 5 different Christmas cards and 2 types of tags to put onto presents. As you can see from the photograph everything that is required to make each card is packed into an individual basket so there is very little (if any) sharing of equipment. On arrival hands are sanitised and face shields donned and then they have a choice of 2 large workstations where they can sit and make their card for the day and if there is time a tag as well. These sessions have been welcomed by those that have decided to attend and I look forward to seeing those who are still self-isolating when the time is right for them.

Group report

Since my last update the 3 Card Making Groups have made lots of beautiful cards ranging from Easter cards, Thank you cards and Birthday cards for men and ladies using different layouts and designs. The groups have also learnt new techniques, an example being how to emboss 3 ways using embossing paste, embossing folders and embossing powders. Each month there is a different project and from September the groups will begin to make their Christmas cards and present tags. We always have fun and there is always lots of laughter as well as making our cards.

The card making groups are thriving. We meet once a month and make a card. The techniques that the group members have mastered recently are stamping and powder embossing and using a heat gun, die cutting, brayering, using acetate to make window cards and embossing folders. Catching up with friends, having fun, tea and biscuits are all included in the £2 cost of the session. In June I started making up card kit packs for those unable to attend a session which are proving very popular.

At the time of writing this report I am in the middle of designing Christmas cards (I know the dreaded word!) as we need to begin making them in September if we wish to make 4 or 5 cards in time for the Christmas post. I do have a 2 spaces on a Wednesday morning (the first Wednesday of the month) so if you think you would like to try your hand please contact me so you can come along for a taster session. One lady who started over a year ago is convinced she isn’t artistic but at the end of each session she is so pleased with the result and often says “I can’t believe I’ve just made this!”
