August monthly meeting

We intend to continue with live monthly meetings, following a successful trial this month. The live meeting was combined with Zoom virtual attendance for the first time. Zoom users were unable to hear the first part of the meeting due to a technical issue which we will ensure does not happen again. Once the sound was restored, all participating were able to enjoy the meeting. We are hoping that there will not be restrictions on numbers next time although we may still ask you to wear masks until you are seated.

We are still investigating the hearing loop settings within the Hayling Community Centre so that we can improve the experience for those with hearing aids, but we realise that not all hearing aids can pick up the hearing loop. For those members it might be more beneficial to sit at the front of the hall or use the Zoom option.

Annual subscriptions

The annual subscriptions were due in April 2021. There are still some subscriptions that have not been paid so far this year. For those that don’t like using cash, we now have a card reader machine that can take your credit or debit card. A membership desk will be available at the monthly meetings going forward.

Bournemouth air festival 3rd September

There are spaces still left for this excellent priced day trip: £30 for the day including a 3-course meal. If you would like to book a place, then please click here or come to the next monthly meeting. The card reader will be available at our monthly meetings if you do not have cash. We must thank Debbie Wilsher for all her hard work in arranging visits over the last few years for us all. She is standing down from this role and now hands the ‘baton’ to Catherine Britton.

Open day 16th September - help needed

We need:

  • A volunteer to be the point of contact for organising the parking marshal rota.
  • A volunteer to be the point of contact for organising the rota for 'meeters and greeters’ on the day.
  • A volunteer to be the point of contact for organising a Beach Clean on the weekend of the 18th September. We are hoping to get the local schools, scouts and guides involved for a true community spirit.

Please contact us if you are able to help.

Phishing emails and scams

Please be vigilant. There have been many phishing emails and scams throughout the lockdowns which have caught a number of people out. We advise you to check your bank accounts regularly to ensure that there have not been any unauthorised transactions.

Susan Humphrey

We sadly reported Sue's death last week. She was one of our founder members and a very well-known member of the Hayling community. Her funeral will be held on Monday July 19th at 4pm but will be for family only. The service will be broadcast on the web so any one who wants to pay their respects can join at www.obitus.com. Please log in to see the username and password you'll need.

In addition, a celebration of her life will be held on the Wednesday 15th September, lunchtime, at the Hayling Island Sailing Club. All will be welcome.

AGM 20/21 and the executive committee

We will be holding our next AGM on 21st October 2021. At that point several of the Executive Committee positions will be coming up for re-election and some officers will be standing down. Anne Hollis will be standing down as Co-Chair. I would like to thank her for her tireless work in helping to keep the organisation going in these difficult times and for being my ‘partner in crime’. Please consider whether you would be able to help on the committee. We are a very friendly bunch and newcomers are always welcome.

Landline telephones

You may have seen our recent announcement that there will be a significant change in the national telephone network between now and 2025.

There's not much you can do right now, but we're letting you know so you can avoid investing heavily in telephone equipment or services unless absolutely necessary.

More information here. Contact Andy Henderson if you have any questions.
