The Portsmouth to London Road

The Portsmouth/London road linked the capital to the nation’s greatest fortress. As a result, many of the great events of our history were connected with this important route. At Thursday’s meeting, Jennifer Goldsmith will tell us about the road’s history and the practicalities of early travel and dangers encountered by travellers, as British history unfolds along what we now regard as just a busy but familiar road. Click here for more details.

Summer newsletter is available

Click here to see it. If you requested a printed version of the newsletter, we'll be distributing your copy shortly. If you can do without your printed copy, we'll be able to save time and money - click here to opt out from the printed version.

It’s time to renew your subscription

Our new year starts at the beginning of September. Because we are changing the end of our year, the fees are higher than last time (£20 for full members and £15 for associate members) but that will cover your membership all the way through to 31st March 2020!

The easiest way to pay your subscription is to bring cash or cheque (made out to “Hayling Island U3A”) to next Thursday’s monthly meeting or the AGM in September.

If you can’t make the meetings, or if you prefer to pay by bank transfer, click here to use our new online renewal service (you will need to log in if you haven’t logged-in recently). If you want to renew by post, you will also find a paper renewal form here or in the Summer newsletter.

Can you help?

We are seeking two or three volunteers to assist with the collection of subscriptions, the issue of new membership cards, and the entry of subscriptions onto the website for the August and September Meetings. If you are willing to help, please contact Paul Chapman.

Visit to Swanage

There are twelve places available on next Friday's (17th August) visit to Swanage which includes a three course meal at the Laguna Hotel in Bournemouth on the way home. All for the incredible price of only £25.00 pp including the meal. Click here to find out more and book you place, or get in touch with the Visits team at visits@haylingu3a.org ASAP.

New way to update the data we hold about you

Previously, you could update some of your information, but the page was generated by our web site software so it wasn’t very friendly and it was limited. We’ve now introduced a simpler page that matches the style of the rest of the site. We hope you find it easier to use. In particular we now show both the name you prefer to use and your given name. That means you can be, for example, ‘Tony’ on the web site but ‘Anthony’ in our HMRC gift aid return. Click here to review and update your details now (you will need to log in if you haven’t logged-in recently).

Our privacy policy

We have streamlined the way we hold and process membership data. We have produced an updated privacy page to:

  • reflect those changes
  • describe how we comply with UK and European data protection laws
  • explain your rights under the legislation

Click here to see the proposed privacy policy which is subject to ratification at next Thursday’s committee meeting. Hopefully, there will be no surprises for you in the policy. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Our constitution

You might be aware that the U3A Trust has required all U3A’s to review and update their constitutions. The committee has done that on your behalf and cleared a new version with the U3A Trust. Click here to see the new version which is subject to ratification at next month’s AGM.

We send this email on the week-end before each monthly meeting. If you have something you'd like to include please let me know.
