The weather’s looking dodgy for Tuesday, but it’s changing quite a bit, so here’s hoping.

I’m suggesting a ride to Chichester this month. You can either take the train to Chichester and cycle back, cycle there and train back, or cycle both ways.

There’s a train leaving Havant at 10.47 arriving 11.08 in Chichester. I suggest we meet at Chichester BR station at that time. Those who want to do some extra miles can meet me at HIADS at 9.30 to give us plenty of time to get to Chichester direct along the A259 using cycle lanes and cycle paths where possible.

From Chichester BR we’ll use the cycle path through to Westgate, over the railway bridge to join the start of the Salterns Way at Apuldram Lane. My inclination is to stick to the road down to Dell Quay Road. There is an off-road alternative (which is part of the Salterns Way) but the surface isn’t great and it takes us a little out of our way – but we can discuss this on the day and even consider splitting the ride and rejoining further on.

From Dell Quay Road we’ll follow the Salterns Way all the way down to Shipton Green. This is a mix of tarmac and off-road. No need for mountain bike tyres, but uncomfortable for skinny ones.

We’ll then be back on tarmac for all but 200m or so of the rest of the ride.

I suggest we stop for lunch at the Boat House café in Chichester Marina, although it might be a bit early. Bosham is another possibility. We can discuss on the ride.

We’ll then use the ferry to cross from Itchenor over to Bosham (£3.50). From there we’ll find the back route to Havant and back home.

The distance from Chichester BR to home is around 26 miles (less than three hours on the bike). Those cycling from HIADS will travel an extra 15 miles.

If you plan to join, please let me know which way you’ll be getting to Chichester so we don’t miss you.

      Hi Andy

I would like to cycle to Chichester and back. But live in Havant. Where is best for me to meet you without coming to Hayling?

I also don’t know where HIADs is; but assume it’s on Hayling.

      Hi everyone,

I would like to cycle both ways. Will you be meeting at The Spring in Havant on the way through? I will meet you there at 10.00am if you are.

Hella, HIADS is the station theatre on Hayling. We usually also meet at The Spring a little later which is what I intend doing. I can meet you there if you like.

      Hi Hella,

10.00am will be early enough! It will take them half an hour to cycle from the theatre.

Given we’re all cycling to Chichester and the weather is potentially giving us a wet start I’m delaying the start at HIADS to 10am arriving at the Spring around 10.30. We’ll not have to cycle all the way in to Chichester so we’ll be back on schedule for the rest of the ride.

Weather could still be an issue, I’m keeping an eye on it.

I am very sorry to cancel só late, but it has gone 10 o’clock and it’s still raining quite a lot with the sky not brightening up…..

I’m not coming on the ride.

I have been very much looking forward to the ride to Chichester, but in the rain and plastic rain gear is not much fun for me. I certainly hope to join you in September again.

      Kind regards

      Hella

Think you made correct decision the expected 30 mins of rain stretched out until we arrived in Chichester- saw little of the sun for the rest of the day – total distance for me 42 miles!!

I kept checking and hoping for you that I’d made the wrong decision…… Sorry for cancelling; I seldom do.

I’ll just do my ‘lockdown circuit ‘ tomorrow morning: farlington marshes and back. Only 10miles, but at least it keeps me cycling!

I hope to join you in September! 🚲

      Hi Hella,

Sorry to have missed you. The rain carried on for a lot longer than expected however we had a great ride led by Andy. Pleased you’re going out for a circuit today in much better weather. Hope to see you next month.

I did 41 mile back to Portsmouth!
