What the butler saw

Stedman, Petworth's Georgian butler, shares his experiences and some things that he probably should not have seen! Explore the secrets of his wine cellar and the eccentricities of drinking and dining etiquette during Georgian times. From the deceits of make up and mouse skin eyebrows to promiscuous seating to chamber pots - nothing is concealed. Irreverent and highly entertaining but true!

Dr Robert France is a National Trust volunteer at Uppark and Petworth - doing guided tours, talks and costume Interpretation, including taking roles of Victorian and Georgian butlers. He lectures on a wide range of history and art-related topics, many inspired by the people and treasures of Uppark and Petworth.

This is the second attempt at this talk as we had to cancel the previous attempt in May last year because of the COVID emergency.
