Home Lad, Home: The War Horse Story tells of their journey from peacetime through to their vital wartime role as cavalry mounts, pulling artillery and ambulances or carrying ordnance and supplies. This illustrated talk using paintings and photographs reveals how depictions of dashing cavalry were soon replaced with less romantic and unglamorous roles characterised by 'mud, shells, chaos and more mud – and death! (Illustrated London News, October 13 1917). Over a quarter of million horses died in France alone, yet the success of the British war effort was heavily dependent on horse power. This is their remarkable story.
