Old Portsmouth and Southsea

Meet at the Barley Mow at 9.35 and catch 31 bus at 9.43 to Havant. Catch 700 Coastliner at 10.22 to The Hard in Portsmouth, postcode PO1 3TZ, grid reference SU630001, arriving at 10.58.

This is a 4.4 mile walk with only 50 feet of height gain.

We start through Gunwharf Quays (toilets available) and then to the Square Tower where we turn South-East to walk on the promenade (as much as we can due to the flood defence works) as far as Southsea Castle. We will stop for coffee at the D-Day Museum (half an hour stop maximum).

We then go along Palmerston Road (Southsea’s main food and shopping street) and return to the Hard via Castle Road, the North side of Southsea Common and the Anglican Cathedral.

The route is paved throughout.

Suggestions for those wanting a pub or café lunch are various choices in Gunwharf Quays or back on the bus to the Parchment Makers (Wetherspoon) in Havant.
