Longer walk: Fareham, Fort Nelson and Portchester Castle

We plan to organise car shares in advance, so will not meet at West Town Car Park.

Park at the junction of Cams Hill and St. Catherine’s Way, Fareham, postcode PO16 8QY, grid reference SU593061.

The route climbs steadily for 2 miles to Fort Nelson, where we can stop for a coffee and maybe a quick dive into the museum. (Half an hour stop maximum). We go past the Nelson Monument and descend slightly, then turn South to climb back to Portsdown Hill then walk downhill, with great views over Portsmouth, to meet Portsmouth Harbour. We walk through Portchester Castle and follow the harbour back as far as Wicor where we turn inland to return to the cars.

It is then a short drive to Cams Mill for late lunch for those who want it (the pub serves food all afternoon).

It should be generally dry underfoot. There may however be a few muddy and puddly stretches after heavy rain.

The total distance is 8 miles, with 500 feet of total height gain, all in the first 3 miles.
