Chidham

Meet at the Community Centre at 9.15am to car share and then on to The Old House at Home, Cot Lane, Chidham, PO18 8SU. Telephone: 01243 572477. See map above for more detail.

Please note that the planned walk must start at 10 promptly and finish by 12 promptly at the Old House at Home. They will need our lunch orders before we set off because they have a very large (funeral) group there at 14:30 by which time they might reasonably expect us to have left! I have provisionally booked 10-15 of us; the food and service were excellent yesterday.

We will not have time to complete the entire 6 mile No. 6 Circular Walk of the peninsula. Be aware that parts of the pathways, few of which are paved, were very muddy even 3 days after rainfall. Sections are uneven, stony and have a few steep steps so walking boots are recommended. At the furthest point, where there are a few benches and lovely views across to West Itchenor, those who wish can take steps down to the pebble beach and walk a short distance to a hide and another bench. High Tide will be 14:26 so it shouldn't be lapping at our feet!

The walk commences at the Pub along the narrow Cot Road south, following the bend eastwards to the Church where we turn onto the footpath south along a grassy track beside paddocks; follow the Chidmere Pond eastwards onto a narrow road, bear right to arrive at a small (for about 11 cars) car park. From its southern end we take a footpath alongside a hedge/field east towards Bosham Channel with views to Bosham. We continue south along the raised grassed path until reaching the Sailing/Activity Centre where there are wooden steps and more muddy areas, passing Cobnor House to the west and then firm pathways as far as Cobnor Point where there are benches for a break. This could take us 45 minutes and, as mentioned above, a short further walk to the beach & hide adds another 10 minutes. We return via the same route. We are not allowed to walk on Cobnor House Drive and I have tried to minimise walking on the narrow roads. Of course, after the lunch some may choose to walk around the village.

Please be at the Community Centre's outer car park for 9:15 and directions. We will need to leave at 9:30 to start the walk in good time. You can contact me via the link above. It would be helpful to have some idea of numbers and, if possible lift share as the Pub car park is relatively small.

This is the route we took. It was an 'out and back' walk to ensure we got back to the Old House at Home in time.
