Chawton (Jane Austen's House)

Meet at West Town car park next to Station Road to car share at 9am (it will take most of an hour to get to Chawton).

We'll then meet in the free public car park in Chawton, opposite Jane Austen's House. Postcode GU34 1SB, grid ref. SU708375. We aim to start walking at 10am.

We'll be following a route originally planned by Sue (Jorj) Boulton and it gives us an opportunity to remember her as we walk. Her description of the walk was:

The circular walk has a few gentle slopes at the beginning and there are 6 stiles (there's now just one - Andy). It has a lot of good shelter in the event of bad weather.

There are some lovely cottages and buildings on the route and a fascinating folly opposite the Church in Upper Farringdon. Most of the route is on footpaths though we have to walk a few country lanes in the villages.

Last time we did this walk, we ate at the Greyfriar pub which is right next to the start. However, it is expensive and its sample menu is limited. I therefore suggest we go down the road to the Selborne Arms. I'm not saying it's cheap, but pricing is more in line with others we visit, and the menu is more accommodating. There is a public car park next door which was free the last time we used it.
