Six of us are now allowed to meet outside provided we observe social distancing and we do not include:

      • Those who are shielding because they are extremely vulnerable (or living with an extremely vulnerable person); or
      • Those who have a possible or confirmed Covid-19 infection.

The HIU3A committee agrees we can resume our ride programme subject to these constraints and any others that might be imposed by the UK government.

We have a ride planned for 7th July which I can now make because the Hayling Cycle Ride has been cancelled.

If six people or less want to ride, there’s no problem. My initial experience with Covid riding is that the only real difficulty is at junctions where the group tends to bunch up in order to cross together. To address that I would ask larger groups to keep a gap and for the second group to hold back at junctions until the first group has started to cross.

Otherwise, if more than six want to ride, we have a couple of choices:

      1. Simply restrict the number of riders on a first-come basis
      2. Try to split the ride with two leaders going to two different destinations (going to the same destination doesn’t seem to me to be in the spirit of the government’s relaxation)

It’s possible we will find somewhere serving take-away drinks or food on the route, but we should expect to have to self-cater stopping at a park, or similar.

Portsmouth CTC has started to build a relief map of open public toilets that could be convenient for us.

I’d normally be considering trips to Petersfield or Chichester round about now, but I suspect members will be reluctant to use trains. Is that right?

Please let me know what you think,

      Andy

How would you like to put this to the committee? Am happy to unless you would prefer to.

Tend to think that likely numbers suggest a first come basis unless……..

Would be happy to take refreshments with us, the equivalent of a large slice of cake!

Would prefer not to use public transport.

Would like to join the 7th July ride.

Thanks for getting back. I’ve been given the go-ahead by Anne and Julie given the next committee meeting will be towards the end of July. Would do no harm to get that confirmation minuted for both Cycling and Longer Walk groups.

      Hi Andy,

I would be interested in joining the July ride.

With regard to the other questions raised then :-

      1. The easiest is obviously to restrict numbers on a first come first served basis. However the odds are that each ride will be oversubscribed so if there are enough riders a second group to another destination seems a good idea to allow everyone a regular chance to join in provided someone is prepared to lead it.
      2. I would certainly be reluctant to use public transport and I suspect others would feel the same.
      3. At this stage of the lockdown it seems as though it would be easier/safer just to self cater .

Hope these comments are useful .

      Best wishes

      David

      Hi Andy,

I am up for a cycle ride on the 7th.

Interestingly a number of Cafes are open for ‘take away’ some take cash but others only take plastic, however most do not allow you to use the facilities or sit down at an outside table, e.g. Stansted Park, although you can use the toilets in the Garden Centre if you don’t mind waiting to be let in.

I have no problem with public transport, i.e. train, but you would have to wear a face mask.

      cheers  Bob

According to its Facebook page, the Hayling Ferry is returning on Saturday. Passengers will have to observe some restrictions, of course. Face masks are required and cardless payments preferred. That gives us some more options for the July ride. Maybe a trip to Stokes Bay?

Stokes bay looks a good option.

OK, let’s go to Stokes Bay. It’s likely we can get takeaway from the Bayside Cabin, but I’m going to take my own coffee and cake to eat on the seafront.

We’ll meet to catch the 10.30 ferry but we can be a maximum of 6 riders. If you’d like to come, please let me know ASAP. If the ride is over-subscribed, I’ll consider options. Please don’t turn up for the ride unannounced. I will abandon the ride rather than continue illegally.

Note that face coverings are required on the Hayling and Gosport ferries. I understand that pretty much anything goes as long as it covers your mouth and nose. The Hayling Ferry asks that you pay with contactless; price is £2.75 per crossing.

      Hi,

Phil and I would both like to join you for this ride if possible and we are free at the moment.

We can meet you at the Eastney side of the Hayling Ferry. We are happy to bring our own refreshments as long as there are some accessible loos somewhere along the route.

      Hello Andy,

I would be interested in joining this ride. However,I quite accept that you cannot exceed 6 people -if I am supernumerary -no problem.

      Hi Andy,

I shall decline the ride at this time.  Not because I don’t want to see you all but I think you will be oversubscribed.  Hopefully by next month things may be a bit clearer and the opportunity for slightly larger activity groups will be with us.  I will probably go solo but have a good ride and we’ll all hopefully be able to get together soon.

      Tony.
